Facts About Radon
Radon, a radioactive gas, is released from the normal decay of uranium, thorium, and radium in rocks and soil. It seeps up through the ground and is released into the air. In some cases, it also dissolves into groundwater and can be released into the air when the faucet is turned on.
People are exposed to low levels of radon outdoors every day. It is when it enters your home that it becomes a problem.
It may also be released from building materials or radon-contaminated well water. Basements and first floors typically have the highest levels because of their proximity to the ground.
People who breathe in high levels of radon over a long, continuous period are at greater risk of developing lung cancer. As radon decays, it gives off tiny radioactive particles. When inhaled, these particles damage the cells that line the lungs.
Scientists believe between 15,000 to 22,000 lung cancer deaths each year are related to radon.
People who are exposed to both cigarette smoke and radon have an increased risk of developing lung cancer when compared to those who are exposed to just one of the substances.

Importance of Radon Testing and Mitigation
The Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Surgeon General, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly recommend all homebuyers (regardless of geographic location or home foundation type) schedule indoor radon testing prior to purchasing or moving in to a home. The good news is that if your levels are high (4.0 pCi/L or greater), radon mitigation done by an NRPP™-certified (National Radon Proficiency Program) or state-licensed radon mitigator is very effective at lowering the gas to safe levels. At AirWiz we offer both radon testing and mitigation.
