AirWiz specializes in thorough inspections of your dryer ductwork. We will make sure your dryer is up to code and safe to operate. We verify your system meets IRC and IMC codes as well as manufacturer best practices for dryer vents. We start with the basics:
- Check for disconnected or broken ducts
- Look for evidence of moisture problems
- Examine the system for clogs
- Verify components are made of the correct material
Once we’ve completed the inspection, we’ll diagnosis any existing problems. We frequently see these dryer vent issues.
- Wrong material. According to IRC Code M1502, the clothes dryer exhaust duct should be made of metal with the correct thickness, finish, and duct diameter.
- Design. Too often vents have multiple turns. Short, straight horizontal duct runs are the most efficient, but not always possible for every homeowner. Best practices dictate a duct length of no more than 25 feet from the wall to the outlet terminal.
- Transition ducts. A transition duct connects the dryer to the wall duct. Problems include code violations, material specifications, and clogs from excess lint.
- Duct supports. Best practices recommends avoiding sags in ductwork by installing supports every four feet. Lack of proper support causes disconnected ducts in walls, which is a complicated, messy repair.
- Termination. The termination outside the building should be at least three feet away from any other building opening and at least 10 feet from HVAC. Mesh cannot be installed at the duct terminus, as it may trap debris.
- Clogs. Lint buildup can cause a dangerous situation leading to dryer fires and lesser issues such as longer dry time, higher energy bills, and damage to clothing. Mold and mildew can also form due to excess moisture from the clogs. This causes smells and may result in health issues, allergic reactions, and respiratory problems.
Once we have correctly diagnosed any issues, we will clean the system and repair or replace any damaged parts.
